“Glass skin” is everywhere — that poreless, luminous, lit-from-within look made famous by Korean skincare. The treatment most associated with it is the BB Laser (sometimes called BB Glow), which at Lumini we perform with the Lavieen device. What the BB Laser (Lavieen) actually is
The Lavieen is a 1927nm thulium fiber laser. That number — 1927 nanometers — is the wavelength of light it emits, and it’s the whole story. At 1927nm, the laser’s energy is strongly absorbed by water in the upper layers of the skin, which is exactly where dullness, uneven tone, sun spots, and rough texture live.
It’s a non-ablative fractional laser, meaning it doesn’t strip the surface off. Instead, it creates microscopic columns of treated tissue surrounded by untouched skin, so you get renewal with much less downtime than aggressive resurfacing.
How it creates the “glow”
Think of the top layer of your skin as a window. Over time, sun, pollution, and cell buildup leave that window cloudy — dull, blotchy, rough. The 1927nm laser works by gently treating that superficial layer so your skin sheds the old, pigment-laden, weathered cells and replaces them with fresh, evenly toned new ones.
Because the energy concentrates near the surface, it’s especially good at three things people associate with “glass skin”: brightening (clearing dullness), evening tone (fading sun spots and patchiness), and smoothing texture (refining the surface so it reflects light more uniformly). The luminous look isn’t a coating — it’s healthier, more even skin reflecting light the way young skin does.
What the science says
The 1927nm wavelength has solid clinical support for tone, texture, and pigment. A 2023 prospective study of a non-ablative 1927nm fractional thulium laser found significant improvement in skin photoaging — including texture and pigmentation — with a good safety profile.¹ A randomized, split-face, double-blind trial compared a fractionated 1927nm thulium laser against a picosecond Nd:YAG laser for facial photorejuvenation, confirming the thulium laser as an effective rejuvenation tool.²
For pigment specifically, a study of nonablative 1927nm fractional resurfacing showed meaningful improvement in facial photopigmentation,³ and research in skin of color found that the 1927nm thulium laser successfully treated post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — important because not every device is safe for deeper skin tones.⁴ A 2025 review in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine summarizes current trends for the 1927nm thulium fiber platform across rejuvenation and pigment.⁵ Pairing the laser with topical actives has also been studied: a 2025 trial combined a 1927nm thulium laser with salicylic acid and reported improved photoaging outcomes.⁶
A note of honesty: “BB Glow” is a marketing term, and the durable, evidence-backed results come from the laser’s effect on your own skin — brightening, smoothing, and evening tone — not from any pigment “deposited” into the skin. We focus on the real, studied mechanism.
