You can do everything right for your face and still be given away by your hands. They’re exposed to sunlight all day, they lose their cushion faster than almost anywhere else on the body, and they’re hard to hide. Here’s the plain-language guide to what actually makes hands look younger — and the evidence behind it.

The back of the hand never had much fat to begin with, and the thin pad it does have shrinks over time. As that cushion thins, the structures underneath — tendons, knuckles, and veins — start to show through, creating that bony, “roadmap” look.¹ At the same time, two other things happen: years of sun exposure leave brown spots (solar lentigines), and the skin itself becomes thinner, drier, and crepey.

So youthful-looking hands really come down to three things — restoring lost volume, fading sun spots, and improving skin quality. The most natural results usually address more than one.

The single biggest change comes from putting the cushion back. Radiesse (calcium hydroxylapatite, or CaHA) is FDA-approved specifically for the back of the hands, and it’s our workhorse here. Hand treatments are quick — usually a single short visit for filler, with results you can see the same day. Some temporary swelling, tenderness, or bruising is normal for the first few days and settles on its own. Laser sessions for sun spots may be done as a short series, with the spots darkening briefly before flaking away.

Does hand filler hurt? There’s some discomfort, but it’s brief and very manageable. Radiesse for the hands is mixed with a numbing anesthetic, and most patients describe the treatment as quick and tolerable.

How long do hand fillers last? For most people, roughly a year or more. Because calcium hydroxylapatite also stimulates your own collagen, the improvement often matures over time rather than fading suddenly.²

Can you do something about the veins on my hands? Yes. Prominent hand veins can be treated with sclerotherapy, and pairing that with filler to restore lost volume is a documented, effective combination.⁴
