Chemical peels are one of the oldest tricks in dermatology — and one of the most misunderstood. The word “peel” makes people picture raw, flaking skin and a week in hiding. In reality, peels range from a lunchtime glow-up to a more serious resurfacing, and the right one for you depends entirely on your skin and your goal. Here’s the plain-language guide to glycolic, salicylic, TCA, and the popular VI Peel — backed by the actual research.
What a chemical peel actually is
A chemical peel applies a carefully chosen acid solution to the skin for a controlled amount of time. The acid loosens the bonds between skin cells and removes the outer, damaged layer — prompting the skin to shed it and replace it with smoother, fresher, more even-toned skin underneath. Deeper peels also stimulate collagen as the skin repairs.
The magic is in matching the type and strength of acid to the problem. That’s the whole game.
How the main peels work
Glycolic acid (an AHA) is water-loving and works on the surface. It’s the classic brightening, smoothing, anti-dullness peel — great for tone, fine texture, and overall radiance.
Salicylic acid (a BHA) is oil-loving, so it gets into pores. That makes it the go-to for acne, congestion, blackheads, and oily skin.
TCA (trichloroacetic acid) is a more powerful resurfacing acid. At appropriate strengths it reaches deeper to tackle pigment, sun damage, and acne scars — with more correction but more downtime.
The VI Peel is a popular pre-mixed blend (it combines acids such as TCA, salicylic acid, and others). The blend approach lets a single peel address several concerns — tone, texture, mild pigment — with manageable recovery, which is why it’s a patient favorite.
What the science says
The evidence for peels is broad and longstanding. For acne, a Cochrane systematic review evaluated alpha-hydroxy (fruit) acids and salicylic acid among topical acne treatments, supporting their role in care.¹ A randomized controlled trial of alpha- and beta-hydroxy acid peels found them effective for post-acne pigmentation.²
For pigment and melasma, glycolic acid peels — alone or combined with a TCA spot peel — improved melasma in a randomized controlled trial.³ A 2024 review in Dermatologic Clinics summarizes the role of chemical peels in treating melasma, while emphasizing careful patient selection.⁴
For texture and acne scarring, a randomized controlled trial compared microneedling with 35% glycolic acid peels versus microneedling with 15% TCA peels for atrophic acne scars, with both combinations improving scars.⁵ And for anti-aging, a randomized controlled study found glycolic acid peel sessions improved signs of photoaging.⁶

Not one-size-fits-all
Which acid, what strength, how many sessions, and how to prep your skin are genuinely clinical decisions — and skin tone matters a great deal here. Used carelessly, peels (especially deeper ones) can cause irritation or, in darker skin tones, unwanted pigment changes. This is not something to guess at from a blog or an at-home kit. Is it safe? How long does it last?
Done correctly, peels are very safe, and downtime scales with depth: superficial peels may cause only mild redness and a day or two of light flaking, while medium-depth peels involve more visible peeling and recovery.⁴ Most people do a series of superficial peels (often spaced 2–4 weeks apart) for cumulative results, while a single medium peel delivers more in one go. Results last longest with sun protection and a maintenance plan — and avoiding sun before and after is essential to prevent pigment problems.
