The 'Vampire Facial,' Explained: PRP + Microneedling for Real Glow
It has a dramatic nickname and a celebrity reputation, but the “vampire facial” is actually one of the most down-to-earth treatments we offer at Lumini: we use your own blood to help your skin rebuild itself. The honest version — minus the hype — is that combining platelet-rich plasma (PRP) with microneedling can improve texture, tone, and that hard-to-fake glow. Here’s the plain-language breakdown, backed by the actual research, so you know what to expect.
What it actually is
A “vampire facial” is microneedling plus PRP. PRP is made from a small sample of your own blood, spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets — the cells packed with the growth factors your body naturally uses to repair tissue. Microneedling uses a device with tiny sterile needles to create thousands of microscopic channels in the skin. Apply the concentrated PRP over (and into) those channels, and you’ve paired a healing signal with a way to deliver it. Nothing synthetic, no foreign filler — just a concentrate of what your body already makes.
How it works
The treatment works on two fronts at once. First, the microneedling itself triggers a controlled wound-healing response: your skin reacts to the tiny channels by producing fresh collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin firm and smooth. Second, the PRP floods that healing process with concentrated growth factors, essentially turning up the volume on your skin’s own repair signals. The microchannels also let the PRP penetrate far better than it could on intact skin. The result builds gradually over weeks as new collagen forms — this is regeneration, not an instant filler effect.
What the science says
PRP for facial rejuvenation has a growing evidence base. A systematic appraisal of the clinical evidence found that PRP can improve signs of facial aging — texture, tone, and fine lines — across multiple studies.¹ Looking specifically at the combination, a clinical evaluation of PRP plus microneedling reported measurable improvements in facial skin quality and patient satisfaction.² A review of microneedling-associated procedures concluded that pairing microneedling with adjuncts like PRP enhances facial-rejuvenation outcomes beyond microneedling alone.³
The strongest controlled data comes from acne scarring, where microneedling and PRP are studied together rigorously. A meta-analysis found that adding PRP to microneedling produced significantly better improvement in atrophic acne scars than microneedling by itself.⁴ Reviews of autologous platelet concentrates for facial rejuvenation describe the same biological rationale — concentrated growth factors accelerating collagen-driven repair.⁵ ⁶
Where we use it at Lumini
- Overall glow and radiance — the signature reason people book it.
- Skin texture and fine lines — smoother surface, refined pores.
- Acne scarring — where the microneedling-plus-PRP evidence is strongest.⁴
- Tone and dullness — a fresher, more even-looking complexion.
- Under-eye area — a delicate zone where a natural, autologous approach is appealing.
Is it safe? How long does it last?
Because PRP comes from your own body, allergic reaction to the product itself is essentially a non-issue — that’s one of its biggest advantages. Expect redness and a flushed, slightly “sunburned” look for a day or two after microneedling, which settles quickly. Results build over the weeks following each session, and most people do a short series (commonly around three treatments spaced about a month apart) for best results, then maintenance over time. Like all collagen-based treatments, it rewards patience: you’re growing new tissue, not painting on a result.
It’s not one-size-fits-all
Whether PRP-plus-microneedling is the right call — and how many sessions you’ll need — depends on your skin, your concern (glow vs. acne scars vs. texture), and what else might serve you better or alongside it. Microneedling depth, PRP preparation, and treatment spacing are all clinical decisions, not something to copy from a viral video. At Lumini, we start with a consultation: our medical team assesses your skin and goals and builds a plan that fits you — sometimes PRP-microneedling on its own, sometimes as part of a broader approach.
At Lumini Medical Spa (Aventura Mall)
We perform PRP microneedling — the “vampire facial” — using your own platelet-rich plasma, and we treat patients in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Pricing is personalized to your plan and the number of sessions your skin calls for, which we confirm at your consultation.
Frequently asked questions
Is the “vampire facial” the same as a PRP facial? Essentially yes — the nickname refers to microneedling combined with PRP made from your own blood. Some clinics use “PRP facial” for a topical PRP-only treatment; the version with the most evidence pairs PRP with microneedling.
Does it actually work, or is it just hype? The published evidence supports real improvements in facial texture, tone, and acne scarring when PRP is combined with microneedling.² ³ ⁴ It’s gradual and natural-looking, not instant.
Is it safe to use my own blood? That’s the appeal — using your own PRP avoids the risk of reacting to a foreign substance. The procedure is performed under sterile medical conditions.
How long is the downtime? Most people have redness and a flushed look for a day or two. Many plan it a few days before a big event rather than the day of.
How many sessions will I need? A short series — often around three, spaced roughly a month apart — is typical, followed by maintenance. We confirm your plan at your consultation.
