It’s the question we hear most at Lumini: “Which one is best — Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin?” The honest answer is that all three are excellent, they’re closely related, and the “best” one depends on you. Here’s the plain-language breakdown — backed by the actual research, so you can walk into your consultation already knowing what matters.
They’re all the same family
Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are all purified forms of botulinum toxin type A. They work the same way: they gently and temporarily relax the specific muscles that create expression lines — frown lines between the brows, forehead lines, and crow’s feet — so the skin above them smooths out. You keep looking like you; you just look more rested.
This matters because you’re choosing between good options, not good versus bad. A 2023 network meta-analysis that pooled many randomized trials found that the major type-A toxins are all effective and safe for frown (glabellar) lines.¹ So the decision is about fine-tuning, not about one “winner.”
How they differ, in real life
Botox is the original and the most-studied — the benchmark for predictability. When people say “I want it to look natural and reliable,” Botox is the reference point.
Dysport tends to kick in a little faster and to diffuse (spread) slightly more from each injection point. That spread can be an advantage across broader areas like the forehead — and it’s exactly why precise dosing and placement matter. Head-to-head randomized studies have compared Botox and Dysport directly,² and a 2025 randomized trial in JAMA Dermatology compared toxin formulations for frown lines.³
Xeomin is often called the “naked” toxin: it’s purified to remove the surrounding complexing proteins, leaving essentially just the active molecule. A randomized equivalence trial found Xeomin performs comparably to Botox for frown lines,⁴ and its protein-free formulation has been studied for its lower potential to trigger resistance — relevant if you get treated frequently over the years.⁵
So which one is right for you?
